Lead by example. You cannot expect your child to sit and sip a green smoothie for breakfast while you tuck into some bacon and eggs or cereal. Young children especially want to copy their parents. If they see you drinking and enjoying green smoothies, they’ll be more likely to want to try them too.
One of the most important parts in introducing and assimilating your kids to drinking green smoothies is to explain why. Answer their questions. Don’t be the parent who says, “Because I said so,” and leave it at that. Nothing makes a kid dig in their heels faster than being presented with yet another set of what they perceive to be imposed restrictions. Explain why you’re taking away their usual treats and what the new ones will do for their bodies. Encourage children to seek out information about healthy food choices. The more information you can give them, and the more you can make them understand the reasoning behind such choices, the more you’re equipping them to make their own healthy food choices when you’re not around. Trust me, this is not as much work as it seems.
Make green smoothies a routine. Decide if it’s going to be a breakfast or afternoon snack or dessert. Pick the time of day that’s most convenient for your family’s schedule and then stick to it. And last, but certainly not least, get your kids involved. Have them help with the prep work, let them throw ingredients into the blender and switch it on, and then let them fill the glasses. On the weekend, when you have a bit more time, let kids create their own green smoothies and experiment with different combinations of ingredients, the more imaginative the better. Few children can resist at least trying something they have made themselves; this is a surefire way to get them excited about green smoothies.
Don’t give up—whatever obstacles you face and no matter how hard it seems. Setbacks are to be expected, because children are notoriously unpredictable creatures; what they love today they’ll hate tomorrow, and you are bound to meet with a few days of resistance along the way. Studies have shown that adults and children generally accept a new food after a whopping eleven tries, so if your kids don’t take to green smoothies straight away, don’t despair. Just do your best and don’t give in—happy, healthy children are in your sights.
